Chapter 20 Overview
In this chapter students will look at the realities of life that African Americans faced in America during the mid-1800s. Students will investigate the essential question: How did African Americans face slavery and discrimination in the mid-1800s. In class we will be using two types of primary sources (pictures and journals) to discover the conditions of African Americans life in this time period. The processing assignment will require students to put themselves in the shoes of a slave in the American South during the mid-1800s and to write their own journal describing the slave experience.

You will write 3 entries in a journal or diary from the perspective of a former slave living in the mid-1800s. Each entry will address a different standard and aspect of slavery. Each bullet point represents a topic which should be described in a detailed paragraph.
